And the reviews are in...SPIDERMAN: TURN OFF THE DARK!!
In something of a precedent-setting move, the New York critics are revolting! (no, THAT's not news...hee haw!). No, this time they're revolting against a common foe, that foe being the producers of the Broadway megaton bomb called Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark. The official opening of the show has been pushed back five times now, with the "official" opening now scheduled for March 15th. But the reviewers, said "NIX" on that, and decided to print their reviews of last night's performance (the previous "official" opening date). And, predictably, the word ain't good. Ben Brantley, of the New York Times stated, "Spider-Man is not only the most expensive musical ever to hit Broadway; it may rank as one of the worst". Elizabeth Vincentelli of the New York Post called it, ""An inconsistent, maddening show that’s equal parts exciting and atrocious." Scott Brown of New York Magazine: "It's by turns hyperstimulated, vivid, lurid, overeducated, underbaked, terrifying, confusing, distracted, ridiculously slick, shockingly clumsy, unmistakably monomaniacal and clinically bipolar". The word on the street is that it is just one great big mess. In usual cases such as this, the real Broadway show fiend would check it out in previews, while atleast the prices are lower. But in this case (another precedent?) the preview prices are just as high as the tickets will be once (if ever?) the show opens. So, if you're really determined, you may just want to bite the bullet and cough up the dough to see this thing soon....because if these reviews are any indication, it just may not be around much longer.
