...it would be the birthday party of the following notables:
Great beauty and major star of the 1930's-40's, Merle Oberon, would be 100 today. Today, she's seen as someone who "passed" racially--she was born in India, of Indian descent, a fact that was not made known to the public in the 1930's. Her story was fictionalized in the 1985 book Queenie, written by her stepson, Michael Korda (which was made into a television miniseries). She is best remembered today for her beautiful performance as the doomed Cathy in the 1939 film, Wuthering Heights.
Great astronomer and the pride of Poland, Nicholas Copernicus was born 538 years ago today.
English actor David Garrick turns 294. He truly had no peers as the greatest actor of the 18th Century. Perhaps the most prestigious private theatrical club in the world, The Garrick Club, in London, was founded in 1831 and named for him....and still thrives today (though it has been in the news recently for their steadfast refusal to allow women to enter the premises "unescorted").
Southern American writer Carson McCullers (The Heart is a Lonely Hunter) would have been 94.
Ann Savage would be 90. She made dozens of forgettable "B" films in the 1940's, but is singularly remembered for one role: The hard-bitten, cigarette-smoking dame in the ne plus ultra of "B"-noir, Detour, in 1945.
Laconic, off-beat leading man of 1960's films, Lee Marvin, 87.
Brilliant British thespian Sir Cedrick Hardwicke, 118. Best known today for his unforgettable portrayal of Captain Hook in Peter Pan, though he was pretty fantastic in just about every project he touched.
Generally regarded by those in-the-know to be the best damned banjo player of all time. You've got to watch this video. Eddie Peabody would have turned 109 today. If you like this, check the other videos of his on Youtube...he was truly a one-of-a-kind talent.
